• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Problems with DivX Files

Trying to help a friend fix up her Mac and I was hoping to get some help. Using a G3 IBook, 500MHz, with 576MB. Is able to decode the audio no problem, but the video lags behind. Is almost unwatchable with Quicktime and Cellulo, but with Mplayer it is a little better, but gets more out of sync as the video plays. Using DivX 5.0.7.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I can get this to work properly?

if tiger is on iBook then you can only wait. at a moment DivX has tiger compatibility issues (QT 7). it also could be slow hardware (less likely).

I'm also running on a G3 500 MHz, and alot of videos I watch are laggy/choppy and generally not enjoyable to watch, no matter what format or player I am using :-/

I've always guessed this was down to my processor (if anyone could confirm this that would be great :black: ), as in Windows Media Player it displays the playing speed of the movie in Kbps, and the higher it is, the worse the movie runs on my computer. You might be having the same problem.

Might also try DivxDoctor II. It converts the movie to QT .mov format. Make sure you have decompress audio checked.

What are the odds that the processor is just not fast enough to keep up with a divx file? I hope this is not the case!

It will probably start dropping frames, i.e. things will be jumpy and stutter quite a bit on higher bitrate films.

Basically the cpu has to take the compressed film and turn it into the regular picture and audio. If the cpu isn't fast enough, it won't be able to keep up.
