I have a relatively new MacBook Pro (bought it in May) and am very happy with it. It's starting to have some issues, though, and I'd like to get it serviced if that's possible, and would like to know what you guys recommend for keeping my comp healthy. For some reason it froze about an hour ago with about 4 Safari windows, Mail, and Pages open... This hasn't happened before. I'm 99.9% sure viruses/nasty websites have nothing to do with this, and figure it's basic wear and tear.

So, 2 questions:

1) Is there something I can run program-wise every so often to sort out/clean up my computer's harddrive and other vitals?

2) Can the Apple store do much servicing-wise? Is it worth paying/costly to get it "tuned up" and cleaned out (I'm sure some dust has gotten inside, etc). ?

1. Repair permissions, don't let your hard drive get more than 80-90% full, restart your computer every now & then (rather than sleep).

2. Not worth it.

If permissions repair has not solved the the problem, use OnyX. It's designed for power users so only download it if a simple permissions repair doesn't work.

Total newbie question, but what's repair permissions?

Also, is there no need to defrag on a Mac?

1. Yes
Go here:
Titanium's Software • Home
And download maintenance for the version of OS X you have. And run it's default configuration once every month or so and you'll be good.

2. Not really worth it. As it won't effect your machine's performance much at all.

Also how full is the hard drive? You do need some 10-20% free space for a drive to work anywhere near capacity.
