Ok, yesterday I ordered a stock model 17-inch PowerBook G4 (512 MB of RAM, 100GB HDD). I am looking into purchasing RAM from an 3rd party (a 1GB stick), but first I need to ask a few questions.

1. Does Apple manufacture its own RAM or does it get supplied by some other company? If the latter is the case, which one?

2. Is there any particular reason Apple charges $500 for just a 1GB SO-DIMM on its website? Is it ECC, is it magical, what is it?

3. Which brand of RAM would you recommend (I am currently looking at Crucial and Kingston but that can change) for performance/compatibility?

Alright, thanks for your help in advance guys!

Congrats on your impending system.

Apple does not make there own memory chips. I don't think anybody can tell you why Apple charges more for there memory, except for Apple themselves.

Thanks! And after doing some research, I found out that Samsung makes Apple's RAM, and I can get it for a decent price from macramdirect.com. Now I just have to wait for the computer. The day I ordered it it was supposed to ship "same business day" but now it's saying not until August 9th! :radioacti

I've had good experience with Kingston RAM, available from www.newegg.com for around 110 or so. 1GB stick, of course. Crucial is universally excellent quality, but only occasionally worth the price - gaming, or very high-demand applications, etc.

And for the record, Apple RAM is, in fact, magical. It unlocks the door to Big Rock Candy Mountain.
