Storing photos and music on a separate drive

My Macbook Pro has a 120GB which is nearly full mainly due to photos using iPhoto and music using iTunes. Is there a way I can safely copy/archive some of these onto a separate hard drive to free up space?

I'm not sure what are the right files to copy without messing up iPhoto or iTunes. Many Thanks in advance.

You can move your iPhoto library like this: iPhoto 8.0 Help: Moving your iPhoto Library folder to a new location

And your iTunes like this: iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
