Before I moved to spain for the year, I borrowed my sister's old ibook G4, which was as I recall working just fine back in California. This is a powerpc version 10.4.11
Since we've gotten the internet set up in my apartment, I am the only person who has not been able to access it by wireless - my roommates have pc's and a new macbook.
This is probably an easy fix, but I have no idea what to do. Could anyone help me with some troubleshooting? It works just fine with an ethernet cable btw, but my roommates don't seem to love when I'm on skype and their trying to watch dubbed crappy american 80's action films.

Also youur iBook is 10.4.11 Tiger correct?

Any chance they could have had your MAC address blocked so you aren't able to connect via Wifi?

The wireless is WEP.

I have no idea if it is tiger correct, or if the mac address is blocked. How do I check for these things?

The only info I get when I check "about this mac" is:
version 10.4.11
processor: 1.33 ghz powerpc G4
memory: 512 mb built-in

under further info it says:
machine name: ibook G4
machine model: Powerbook 6,7
system version: mac osx 10.4.11 (8S165)
Kernal verson: darwin 8.11.0

Turn The airport on, Connect to the wifi, then check "System Preferences" then "network" what does the Airport status say?

I can't connect to the wifi. After entering the password, it begins to try to connect, but then says "there was an error joining the AirPort network"

Is the WEP Ascii? Hex? Makes a difference. Ascii would be letters like in a word. Hex is Letter Number like :0DAA672E8F if you get the idea.

The WEP password is a (very) long string of numbers, no letters. This is the default key.

WEP is not very secure as it can be broken easily, so if possible switch to WPA2 or at the very least WPA. And WEP passwords should really be hex not ascii. A string of numbers may not necessarily work right. Some routers won't accept a password like that.

I had never seen a password like this back in the states, but this is the default key that the router came with, and the rest of my roommates seem to be using it with no problems. Still quite clueless here.

thank you so much everyone for your responses so far

Try this as it can't hurt. It's worked in the past with strange ASCII keys.

Put a Dollar Sign in front of the key like this:

$456318434.
$ then the key. See if that works.

What that does it force it into ACSII. Glad I could help.
