• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have a Panasonic sd600 hd camcorder and i am looking to buy an imac 24" but i have just realised that the imacs dont have a hdmi socket. Can i use the sd card slot or does this not recognise avchd files. And also, would i lose hd quality by doing this. Sorry to sound dumb but i am a complete newbie to apple imacs, i just want to capture footage while keeping the original hd quality. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

You should be able to hook up the camcorder via USB or take the SD card out and plug it into an SD reader on the Mac.

In importing the AVCHD footage, it's converted to an edit friendly codec on the Mac - either Apple Intermediate Codec (for iMovie or Final Cut Express) or ProRES (Final Cut Pro). Both AIC and ProRES support HD footage. There are some limitations on how HD is handled on iMovie and FCE, but most people don't have an issue with it for home movies and such.

According to Apples website: iMovie '09: Camcorder Support that camera is compatible with iMovie '09 which comes on any Mac that has iLife '09.
