I had my external hard drive connected to a friend's macbook pro and it crashed. we stupidly unplugged the drive without unmounting it. now my macbook pro won't recognize the external hard drive, and disk utility can't seem to solve the problem. does anyone know how can I repair the drive without reformatting it? (in my bootcamp partition windows has no problem recognizing the external disk)

thanks for your help!

What format is the external hard drive using? If it's using FAT-32 or NTFS, hook it to your Mac after you boot into Windows. Once it's mounted open a command prompt and issue this command: chkdsk d: /f (assuming your external mounts as drive d)

Regards.
