switching from cable to dsl

I've read a few messages here that have reported problems when switching from cable to DSL with AT & T and their time capsule.

AT & T is claiming that I need to purchase my own modem since they do not lease them anymore. Is there a modem that has proven more successful with Time Capsule than others? Does anyone know?
