Sometimes when deleting an application (like a game that the download trial version has expired) and I try to empty the trash, I get the message "The operation can't be completed because the item "MacProtectMonitor" is in use. Then gives the options Stop or Continue. Either option just goes away and the trash is still not empty. What should I do??

If that happens, I usually just restart my Mac, and it stops that application from running.

...or just Quit the application it had been opened in.

Find out what MacProtectMonitor is, and how to uninstall it. Then uninstall it.

Sounds like one of those pointless, useless "virus" protectors. Waste of money the lot of them.

Sounds like it's a background program at the very least, which means a restart may not quit it/fix the problem. I would figure out how to uninstall it and then do so (as another knowledgeable also pointed out).

You could Option/Command/Esc and Force Quite the offending application if it shows on the menu. Or, a reboot should work unless the app is on your /System Preferences/Accounts/ Log In Items list. If so, remove it from the list and reboot.

MacProtectMonitor is a part of many PopCap Games.

Error message would seem to indicate you have not actually quit the game when it was moved to the trash.
