I can't access some websites
(www.rae.es)

I can get there from my other windows desktops, but I haven't tried reaching it from another mac. I just get the search suggestions from my ISP. This has been a problem for as far as I can remember.

some don't load on the first try. I had to try coming here twice to get it to load. Sometimes I get "safari can't display the website", other times I get the search suggestions from my ISP (suddenlink)

I would clear the cache of your browser for a start. I had no difficulty accessing the link you mentioned.

Try substituting your providers' DNS numbers with Google's and see if that makes a difference.

Sorry, this is a rant in general and not directed at any user in particular:

I seriously hate it when people do this. Here's an analogy:

me: "I can't do such and so."

responder: "Try flingoring the borkfargles."

me: "I don't know what that is."

responder: "Go to the library and check out Thomson's comprehensive guide to borkfargles."

me: "can't you at least tell me what a borkfargle is?"

responder: "The book will answer all your questions."

(and yes, I know what google is) but I came to this forum to get answers, not to get sent looking for answers elsewhere.

Maybe I'm not up on internet culture and etiquette, but I really like it when a warm body answers my questions, rather then make me google for them, which i could have done without coming here.

fixed (sort of)! I just disconnected my router and plugged the ethernet straight into my modem. Not only does the site load, but everything is so snappy now.

I got this router from target for $40. Should I get a better one?

Also, what's this about porn? The Royal Spanish Academy isn't a porn site.

I had similar problems with things not loading correctly, such as google maps and google images. I had a Belkin router and I had to turn the firewall off that protected Ping of Death (PoD) and Denial of Service (DoS). I don't know if that is related but after turning them off my webpages loaded a lot faster and google maps and google images worked fine. If you want to do that just access your routers ip address (eg 192.168.0.1) and click firewall, you should find the settings there.

Hope that helps

If you are going to do that then I would also advise switching the OS X firewall on as for some reason it is set to off as default. That should be located in System Preferences>Security>Firewall.

I looked under security and the "turn firewall on" button is dimmed. along with the rest of the options under firewall.

I've decided to disconnect my router because it seems to be slowing everything down. I tried disabling the ping thing and that didn't work. I also tried turning off the firewall on the router, and that didn't work either. Again, however, not having the router makes everything snappy, and rae.es loads just as quickly.

I'm thinking I need a better router. How are the apple offerings? (airport express/extreme)

I know lots of people who have problems with Belkin routers. Not the best in my experience. Netgear routers are pretty good though. Apple do the TimeCapsule which looks very good and something which I am considering. I like the way time machine and time capsule link up and allows you to backup wirelessly without any effort. Great idea if you ask me. The only thing that puts me off is that it does not have a modem built in which would mean I would have to link my wireless modem router into the time capsule which doesn't seem the neatest solution to me. I'm guessing ADSL must not be too popular in the states?

You also need to click the padlock at the bottom left hand corner of the firewall settings page and put in your password to make any changes in that area. Sorry should have mentioned it before.
