• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

DVD-R Capacity

I'm trying to make a copy of a dvd movie for my library but I don't know if it is possible to compress a movie into a DVD-R disc. The movie is 7.5GB but uses only one disc. How is this possible since most DVD-R discs available can only hold 4.7GB.

Thanks.

a dvd can be upwards of nearly 10GB . unfortunately those are special ordered by movie production companies, and not available to the public. if you just want the movie with no chapter makers or extras, you can rip the video and audio and compress them. then put them together and burn them and itll be less than 4.7GB

theres a thread on how to do this. Copying DVD's Tutorial

Dual Layer DVD's are 10$ each and are available in stores. They can hold up to 8GB and are what some Production Companies use.

Yep, basically a dual layer DVD has 2 information layers on top of each other = double the capacity.

That's what nearly all commercial DVD's are, some also have 2 layers on either side of the disk, but these are rare.

Dual Layer burners and disks have been on the market about a year now...
