I was just wondering if anyone has any comments on this HDD for 13 inch machbook pro. I am planning to buy this one but not sure if it is compatible. Primary reason for doubt is since the page says its for AV application. and only one review on this. I have no clue what he is talking about ... some "alignment" and stuff ... any comments?

Yes, it will be fine. That said, is there any reason you're settling for a 5400rpm drive?

I read about some problems with 7200 rpm on macbook ... and people talking about not-so-much speed improvement using 7200 rpm ... but moreover with speed we are sacrificing the reliability ... hence ... 5400 :)

I wouldn't put another 5400 drive in there either.

I have the same MBP as the OP. Switch out the original HDD for the Hitachi Travelstar 500gb, 7200rpm. Applications load up faster and absolutely no problem so far after 4+ months. No vibration, no noise, no excessive heat, no noticeable battery drain. I bought it for $100 but I think it's down to$ 79 now.

I bought the 7200rpm 500Gb for mine, and couldn't be happier with it. The guys at Apple recommended against it, but I did it and there is a speed deifference, and no loss of battery life like they had said.

Apple won't recommend any products but their own ;D

Where did you get that idea from? First, Apple does not manufacture hard drives; the drives they use can be purchased off the shelf. The reason they recommended against running a 7200 RPM is the mistaken notion that it would use more power and reduce battery life. It doesn't.

Regards.

Just pulling my earlier thread back ... I was reading about EFI firmware problem due to 1.7 upgrade for the model I have. I checked and found that I have already installed 1.7. Am I doomed? or do I have any alternate solution to still upgrade my HDD to 7200 rpm 500Gb? I checked few forums for link to downgrade the firmware but the links are broken.

Thanks

It will be fine, trust me. The only issues that were EFI related were with a particular series of Seagate drives.
