Is it worth $2,000

Can someone tell me if upgrading to a iMac G5 is worth it?

I do video editing and need the system to be confuigured like this:

• 2GB DDR400 SDRAM - 2 DIMMs
• 160GB Serial ATA drive
• SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
• Keyboard and Mouse + Mac OS X - U.S. English
• 56Kbps Modem
• 17-inch widescreen LCD
• 2GHz PowerPC G5
• ATI Radeon 9600 with 128MB DDR Video Memory
• AirPort Extreme
• Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

I use a Sony RB30 right now and i have found it is not good enough!

It is three months old!

I would say it is worth it, if you can part with the money. And I can say this: You will NOT regret it!

I would get a powermac dual but thats me.

The price is high but the quality can not be beat. I agree with Graphite, but don't tell anyone lol I'm new to this stuff so iMac is good enough for now but as I see all that there is to do on these things...the powermac dual sure seems like the jem of them all

I have one configured the same as you're looking at, less 1 gig of ram, and I love it. However, if you're doing professional video editing (i.e for work) spring for the power mac. Imacs get a little loud when they're pushed for heavy CPU duties and they have annoyed many on these forums. An iMac is as much about the art as the function, but if I was into v/e I'd get the p/m.

I have the 20" version of that config (also less a gig of RAM) it is awesome. I actually do quite a bit of video editing on it and handles it fairly well... I think my only complaint is that this machine kicks so much tail it makes me want to know how much more damage I could do with a dual 2.7 PM. Hmmm... Soon enough. Anyhow, price for the features, the iMac can't be beat.

Well... yeah... I guess I'd have to agree with that

start with the iMac, then work your way up to the power of the dual G5.... if you plan on expanding your video needs, buy another one... and then maybe evenutally a powerbook.

what kinda video editing like mini dv or hd quality and im assuming that your going to be using final cut pro

if your just doing mini dv then get the imac but if your doing hd defiantly get the power mac....spring for the 2.0 ghz

Buy the ram seperate! I got 2gb to stick in my imac apple original for around $250 off ebay.
I use my 20" G5 imac for final cut, and premiere, and this sucker flies!
For what i do (pretty high end) it is good, but i often use my companys G5 2.7DP for it as well, but the price difference...
But yeah, this is one machine!

Actually i disagree completely.
I use both HD cameras (We have 3 Sony Dsr-570's) which we use for various uses, and for getting the stuff down, we use the imac which works a treat.
We also have a bunch of Sony VX1000s minidv camcorders which also are great to work.
Seriously in this day and age, you don't need a $4000 powermac to edit HD footage!
Obviously its an advantage, but not a necessity

i didnt say that he had to buy a $4000 power mac i said the 2.0 ghz
witch is $2000....like $400 dollars more than a 20 imac

edit:nevermind i thought he was buying a stock 20'....yeah definitely go with the imac

Nope... Final Cut will run great! Apple Motion can be a little sluggish... But still way faster for motion graphics than something like After Effects.
