hey everybody,
i have just heard that the nVidia GeForce GT 330M in the new i7 macbook pros (like mine) is actually downclocked. is this true?? the GT 330M in my i7 MBP does have 512mb VRAM. is the GT 330M with 1024mb VRAM found in PC notebooks not downclocked? what performance decrease is there due to the lower clock frequencies (where ever that may be), oh and does anybody know if this the software which downclocks it or is it hardware, because if it were software then surely there must be a way to have it running at native clock speeds.

Thanks guys

If you have a windows partition on your macbook, you can find out by installing gpu-z

It wouldn't surprise me if it is. A great many notebook manufacturers purchase underclocked video chips to assist with the cooling.

i heard it was about battery life aswell, makes sense as apple really wanted to push the battery life up again

OK, i have installed GPU-Z and found out the following:
GPU Clock: 500 MHz
Memory: 790 MHz
Shader: 1100MHz
seems like to me apple really has a highly downclocked GT 330 M as on the nVidia website it says the 330m can have up to 1265 MHz :( and also 1024mb VRAM, its a pity apple didnt provide the 1gig version but then i guess the battery life would be halved. I think the best would have been to have the biggest possible GT 330M and then somekinda software to downclock it which can be manually disabled or even automatically goes to native clock speeds when needed. But then thats probably not possible :p

Is this GPU maxed out at 500MHz?? no possible way to up clock it??

Doing so would put your warranty at risk.

I would suggest not messing with it. If the computer does not meet your needs as delivered, sell it and find one that does.

Too many...
I've seen the 330m on the macbook pros, and I have to say, I don't think you really need that much more, and that's coming from a comparison of my 9600mGT with only 256mb! I would not mind picking slower speed for more battery life and better reliability. But, that's just me, and the most I work on is photoshop:)
