machine is slow

HI,

15 days back i have purchased a Macbook pro which i3 cpu and 4 gb Ram.
i am not a heavy software user, working on mails & skype only and i have installed windows 7 in virtual machine software. still i have noted that it is much slower as my old machine Macbook pro (core 2 duo + 2 gb memory). my new macbook has snow leopard 10.6.4 some time it hangs while switching between applications. after few mins it gave me response.
please suggest me any steps i can apply, i am a new user in Mac.

I don't know whether my suggestion will help very much, or in fact, at all, but have you tried verifying/repairing your permissions, as a starting point?

Are you running your Windows 7 VM when you notice the slow down? SL on that machine with just Mail and Skype open should fly.
