Disc won't show up or eject from new mac

Hi all, I just set up my new mac at work and I put in a disc for an external hard drive, the disc is not reading or coming out of the mac. Any suggestions? It's just in there.

13.3" MacBook, non-Pro, Snow Leopard
There are a few suggestions here; a couple of them ask you to use an icon you don't have, but the shutdown to Open Firmware (last suggestion) should do the trick no matter what.
