I think my MacBook has spyware. Please help!

I was trying to get on Netflix: Rent as many movies as you want for only $8.99 a month! Free Trial to watch a movie on there and I kept getting directed to att.com. I tried everything to get to netflix and I just can't get there. So I called netflix, thinking it was a problem on their end. The guy worked with me and nothing happened, so he guessed that I had spyware/adware thing going on. I don't really know much about it or how to tell if I have it/how to get rid of it, etc. Can anyone help? I'm kinda worried about it. Please help! What do I do?

Well first, let's apply some common sense.

What would the purpose of spyware be, if it existed solely to reroute netflix.com traffic to att.com? Think about that.

Once you have figured out it's likely not spyware, understand also that such things in OS X are extremely, extremely, extremely rare.

The next thing to do, is open a terminal. In Application -> Utilities -> Terminal. In the terminal, type:

ping netflix.com

and see what you get. It should look as such:

64 bytes from 208.75.79.17: icmp_seq=0 ttl=246 time=14.868 ms
64 bytes from 208.75.79.17: icmp_seq=1 ttl=246 time=26.108 ms
64 bytes from 208.75.79.17: icmp_seq=2 ttl=246 time=16.824 ms
64 bytes from 208.75.79.17: icmp_seq=3 ttl=246 time=28.620 ms

That IP is netflix.com. They may have others, but that is one of them. See what you get.

There is no SPyware in the classic sense for OSX. There IS an DSN changer trojan. Only way so far to get it is:

Download a pirated version of iWork, iLife and some Adobe stuff.
Install a Codec from a so called Video site and give it the administrator password.

Did you do either of the above recently?

Sounds like the person you talked to just wanted to give you an answer and shut you up. Why would AT&T need to use malware to get you to visit their site from Netflix?

I would just make sure you've typed in Netflix.com correctly and that you aren't clicking on a pop-up ad taking you to AT&T's site or something.

If it happened to you, it should happen to anyone who clicks on the link, but I get the correct page.

Is Netflix the only site that you get redirected away from? What does it say under DNS in the Network pref pane?
