Transferring mkv to external harddrive?

Hey all, im having trouble transferring mkv files from my macbook to my external harddrive, its formatted to fat32 and i know there is a limit to the seized files you can transfer eg 4gb, but i have some mkv files smaller than that and i cant transfer them to the external, any ideas?
