It seems my account was accessed from China. So if you use Gmail, chack now and change your passwords if you need to. Just a little friendly warning. :).

Thanks for the heads up. I checked my recent activity, but there was nothing I could not explain (thank heavens). Maybe it is because I am not US-based, or maybe they only infiltrated a few accounts?

Anyway, I am certainly going to look into some alerts on this kind of things. This is worrying and since I am always using macMail, I do not see these alerts at all.

I've heard that GMail has been compromised more than once. The word on the street is that this is causing panic within Google. They have enjoyed a safe, secure environment for users. Recent compromises mean that passwords and data have been stolen. I've taken a lot of my sensitive off of Google docs.

Yeah, that is especially the reason that I am trying to minimize the use of my GMail account as well. However, since I have an iPhone and Mac, I want them both to be synched... my provider only offers POP, so that isnt perfect. If i ever have the money I would like to get either MobileMe, or a personal mailserver (maybe one of those Mac Minis...?)

Until then I have to be very careful with data and GMail, though.

I am about ready to ditch Gmail entirely. I usually check my Gmail account using Mail and that works fine. Tried to use my Gmaii account and password to configure a program on the iPad and can't remember the password. Their reset procedure is driving me nuts with those stupid captcha graphics I can never seem to read. This might push me over the edge.

I love the interface of Gmail. But I have never use it for sensitive work. Somehow I had this sense of insecurity using it.

I find the concept of sharing documents in Google Docs very useful. But it's really an open invitation to hackers out there.

Any of the above, or people checking in on this thread, had trouble with mail at Gmail not being forwarded to another, different ISP account, even when it's set to do so?

I use POP to access my gmail account, so I went ahead and logged onto the website to check things out.

No problems but I realized that my old a-rick***@microsoft.com email address was still being used as a backup for lost passwords. I think it may be time to change that since I haven't worked at Microsoft in the last five years. ;)

Err no, that works perfectly for me.

Currently, I have set up my ISP-mail account to forward mails to Gmail, and Gmail forwards all mails sent to that address directly to my ISP-mail as well.

So no, I have not encountered any forwarding issues in either direction.

Thanks for the heads up. Yesterday I bought 1Password and started increasing my password strength. Today, I read two accounts of hacked emails/personal data. Its about time I did something about my passwords.

Actually it got worse for me.
Gmail wanted to send me a code to my mobile to ensure it was me accessing my account. Why do that??? But 5 seconds later I knew why. A random hackbot hacked into my Gmail account. And a few of my friends were sent spam emails. Not porn or anything. Real spam like random jumbled letters and stuff. And a few random url links too.

So I changed my gmail password again.
Why pick my Gmail account to hack into?

Because they can and have the resources to. If they don't need you now, they might in the future.

Be aware GMail and Hotmail are very easily compromised.

This is awesome... Right as my university is in the process of migrating over 15,000 student accounts (as well as faculty accounts) over to Gmail. Thanks for the heads up.
