AFP: Obama bemoans 'diversions' of IPod, Xbox era

This what the President said really shows his ignorance to the modern world and how it is evolving. And the President forgot one thing. Information is power. But information overload is bad. And the smart people can sift quickly through all the information for what is useful. And companies like Google make search engines and other things so the masses can easily sift through the information.

Calm down please :). They all give out information. Be it useful or just in the form of a video game. That's all I meant. I know apart from that they are fundamentally different products. But really to the President they are all the same. Products does not know how to use. It's all there in the article.

No worries, I am calm just trying to find the correlation between the two,But I guess to the President it's all the same. It's like here in the U.S. one of our supreme court justices asked what was the difference between a email and a pager...lol

Just sounds like he's asking people to stop screwing around and to pursue higher education.

There's nothing wrong with that, I remember a while back he did that speech to a bunch of High School kids, People were all up in arms over it, I saw and actually thought it was a pretty good. I didn't even vote for the guy I do find him very like-able.

Little does he know that soon enough ipads will be used in higher education programs. And business also have plans to use the ipad too. The president needs to know work can be done on these devices as well as gaming. And there is ibooks for educational materials and textbooks too.

Don't bet on the IPad hitting higher education that quickly. THe problem is 2 fold. First, the initial cost of the device is too expensive for most university students and secondly, the book companies that sell books to the universities will not want to publish on a device like that as it would make it easier to pirate. It is bad enough that most books change editions from semester to semester nowadays making it hard to use a book more than once.

Most publishers will end up keeping the traditional text so that they and the schools can make a nice penny charging us for them.

I think he is more on about the quality of the news and information media on the Internet, which is accessed through these devices, rather than any fault in the devices themselves.

With all the information about him that has been promulgated on the Internet (he is a Muslim, not American, a socialist etc.), he probably has a point.

And please, don't take me up on the socialist Obama debate, he is certainly not a socialist by any definition that a die hard socialist would understand. At worst, you could accuse him of being a bit like a social democrat, and that is more centre left than a socialist - which would be far left.

I can see what he means in a way. There have been many times, where I see a dug headline on digg that is very shocking and attention-getting, yet it's just a blog spinning the story how they see fit and sources aren't challenged. Or we just read the headline, yet we don't even bother to click on the article, accept it as fact or baseless opinions, and quickly move onto the next headline.

Is he really wrong with his statement? I agree with what he said. I believe more people are getting sucked in to the "digital age" at younger ages, which pushes education to the side. Right now, I see education and technology more so separate than uniformed. When the two become one, we will see the next boom in the U.S. economy. And I'm not just talking about schools having computers. Educators should be at the same technological level as the students they are teaching too. But, that's just how I see it based on what I have noticed, and as I just read how Obama used himself as an example of what needs improving.

I personally find his comments to be incredibly idiotic, considering his position in the world. First off, he's basically condescending to the audience whom he is reaching with his statements. He's doing this by assuming that those whom have an interest in consuming information via those methods he's talking about, can not decipher information, from misinformation.

Secondly, and I think more importantly, he is addressing an important issue, but on a very small scale. He's managing to single out a type of technology which has managed to evolve into what it is, faster, than its preceding counterpart, print and television media. The problem with this, is that the larger issue, has been the catalyst in not only breeding stupidity within the masses of all technologically savvy societies, but it also continues to be the leading cause of all misinformation upon which these societies base their most important opinions and decisions.

And this larger issue I speak of, is the media in general. There is no such thing as integrity in modern television or printed journalism... Perhaps there might have been at one point in our history, but I've never seen or felt it in my life. Big corporations run the show, not journalists. We're inundated with useless products in commercial after commercial, just sat there like a vegetable waiting to hear what we 'think' is the truth when all it ever is, is a slant in the direction they want us to sway with.

And let's not forget how quickly these 'professional' journalists would have us visit their Twitter or Facebook sites... because that must be absolutely key in reporting !

Well, I could probably go on for a long while on this topic, but I haven't the stamina right now. I'm tired. Let Obama call 'shenanigan's' on the more important things in life, before trying to tackle a complicated issue such as in that link. Let him address the people of the world and tell them to stop being whiny children who have to form small rights groups for every time someone who's views they don't agree with, happens to breathe the same air space they do. Let Obama address issues such as idiot school administrations not letting teachers fail students for not having learned anything.

Let Obama send out a message first, to those annoying and schmucky parents whom feel that every kid who plays ball is a winner, and that there can't be a loser. Let him tell his country that it IS ok to lose, that it IS ok to be in a fierce competition where ultimately one will win and one will lose, but both will learn valuable lessons therein.

Let him take on the issues which are turning the whole of the United States into sniveling little babies, and give people a bit of incentive in order that they gain more confidence and fight to actually produce something, rather than outsource everything.

In my opinion, he's not much else other than a fairly well spoken preacher, whom is pretty much... saying nothing. Reminds me of the James Brown song, Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing. Meh, different president, slightly different tactics, same ol' story. Sorry but.. a politician is a politician is a politician. He's no different than the rest. So long as we abide by the currently ruling monetary system, this will NEVER change. I know that sounds a bit over the top, but it is nevertheless true.

I found his comments surprising as I had assumed he was a bit of a technophile based on his love of his blackberry. Guess I had that wrong and the reason he probably loves his blackberry is probably like most non-techno lovers they fear the unknown of a new device. So since he is used to that phone he fears having to learn a new one. Just my take on it.

Alright, XJ, I can respect you've got your own opinion and what not, right? That's fine. But you seem intelligent enough to at least be able to acknowledge the hypocrisy of the right wing media, right? Even if you agree with all the crap they're spouting (my opinion that it's crap haha), you do realize that they're accusing President O for doing the same things that his predecessor did (using executive power to pass legislation) and now all of a sudden it's become socialist, right?

I at least respect that you seem to be a pretty smart guy.

Please don't make any assumptions (not saying that you are making any) that I am a Republican. I am not, and I am quite aware that GWB did the same. As an isolationist, I'd have preferred we didn't engage our troops in every international dispute as well. That's why we have guided missiles. Personally, I'd rather have seen Giuliani win, but such is life. Anyhow, IMHO the media is neither left or right wing, and serves only itself (read "stockholders") for the most part. The media is, and always has been, a business. It is not a sacred institution for change, justice or fairness. I take it all with a bit of salt.

Yea, the media is a big crazy f'storm. Unfortunately, the media runs the narratives for political platforms. I mean, there's clearly the "left wing" media and the "right wing" media, but both are perfectly pit against one another arguing each side, it seems too well placed sometimes. My thing with the right "flavor" though is how it tries to force feed this idea that all of these knocks on Obama are new things and that the same right that supported two years ago never did the same things if not to a worse degree.

It's just ridiculous. :)

I think it's a matter of well when it's my guy in office it's OK (whether it's left or right). People gripe about Obama being a socialist and taking away our freedoms, but look how much Bush expanded Government e.g. Patriot Act.

I don't know about the rest of you,But I'm tired of Republicans and Democrats.

Believe me, you and I are far from being alone in feeling that sentiment. It's just unfortunate that the majority whom feel this way, also feel as if there's really nothing which can be done to alter how the system works. I do give credit where it's due though... The men whom devised our current cluster F of a system where old money stays on top (and passes it down, along with their position) and keep all others under them whom never make a dent, really are the true definition of maniacal genius. It's going to take a very large revolution in order to make man kind the type of being that is actually worthy of the short lives we've been given to play out.
