I just tried to open one of my protected pdfs on my Mac. On my PC you type in the info and it accesses the web and verifies that you have the right to open the pdf. On my MAc, it opens in preview and never contacts the web, and will not open. Suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. Not sure from your post if it opens or not.
If you click the file icon to select it then File > Get info it will give you this;

Click for full size

clicking the padlock will allow you to change it to read and write.
Hope that was what you were looking for.

This may be a feature that Preview lacks. I suggest that you download and install Adobe Reader. I've seen certain "advanced" features that just don't work with Preview that ultimately require Adobe Reader.
