External Hard Drive Safety Issues

Your Mac's Specs
iMac G5 17", 1.8 Ghz, 1GB RAM
Well I was wondering, is it safe to have my external 160GB Lacie HD always connected to my iMac and have it on every time my Mac is on? Will doing so risk it to overheat? Thanks! :biohazard

External storage devices are designed and built with the expectation that they will be used as part of the system. In other words they are designed to be on and accessible when the computer is on. However, if you use the drive only occassionally you may want to save some money on electricity and shut it off.
