The issue: the message creation box is too small to see an entire post if it gets a little lengthy. There are no scroll bars for it either. The advanced option gives you a little more real estate, but still not enough.

Another 4 hours and it'll be a week it took me to luck into the fix for this one. Plus having to write a post saying it was an issue. Took about two minutes after I said it couldn't be done to figure out how to do it. What else is new.

You have to place two fingers on the screen. Both fingers must be inside the message box. Then spread them apart like you're going to enlarge the screen. You'll notice it start to scroll instead of enlarging. Then lift one finger only and keep the other on the screen. You can now use your second finger to scroll up and down within the message box. It does take a little practice to get it down.

Hopefully this will save others the frustration and the need to have to pick up your notebook again just to make an edit.

Opps! I made a much worse mistake tonight doing moderating so don't feel too bad Bob!! :D

Glad the good user here was understanding! :D

Thanks for the heads up.

Could you try clicking Quick Links and see if that expands so I can click on New Messages?

Yes all the links expand. The "Quick Links" button has to be touched twice though. It just won't expand the first time it's touched over 95 % of the time. All the others seem to work on first tap. The 'Today's Posts' is what I use almost exclusively.

( Saw that one and was wondering what in the world did he do till I saw your oopps.)

Very good. Thanks so much for testing that for me. I tried it on the iPhone and it works also but it's so small! :D

Another thing I just figured out...

Links in the browser... Just touch and hold... and you'll get a pop up box with the options to Open, Open in a New Page, or Copy the link.

Yeah, I know, I'm a little slow.

Edit: Another feature of Safari, it now has the Bookmarks bar.

Bobtomay, I finally got up to my Apple Store and messed with an iPad. I see why you like it. Very impressed with the 5 minutes I got to play with it. The whole front right part of the Apple Store I took pics of that time for that other forum was filled with iPads, so it was easy to get a hold of one to try out. I can for sure see me buying one as soon as I scrape up the $$$.

When I'm writing one of my patented mini-novels on here (okay RANTS there I said it!), I use the "expand" area on the bottom right corner of the message box to make the box bigger.

Can you do that on the iPad? I don't have one yet but would feel more comfortable knowing that I will be able to (not just "resize via zooming").

It's getting better the more I use it also. I have a feeling there are still more gestures and tricks I haven't discovered. It is slower than using my MBP. Since I spend so much time here, I'm having to learn how to cut, copy and paste, how to insert a link, and several other things. But, it's starting to come together.

I was finding myself having to open up the MBP once every half hour the first several days to get some task accomplished. While I still have it sitting on the arm of my recliner, I didn't have to open it once last night. The heat in my lap is certainly not missed at all and is a trade-off for me.

Some of the things that are slower or that I miss would be totally unacceptable if I were sitting at a desk trying to get work done. But most of what I do on a computer at home is done from the comfort of my recliner while watching TV, and slowing down the pace a little, I find not to be such a bad thing.

Chas,

That little button to expand the text box is not there. You have to use the method I've described above and it takes practice. The text box itself does not expand to a larger size to fit more text within it. Or if it does, I have not figured out how to do it yet. But at least I can scroll inside the box now.

I can tell you now, you're more than likely to be a little frustrated with the some of the functions that are just not available within forums on the iPad.

Ex. No cursor, so no more scrolling down the list of the newest threads and getting a preview of the post.

Bobtomay, thanks for bringing up that heat part or lack of heat. With all the talk of the iPad overheating I checked a few of them. The back side was cold and it was quite warm here today. They had been on since 9AM and it was 3PM. They really were that cool running.

I am afraid if I had an iPad (which will happen sometime) my computers will only be used for serious video and audio work and such. They would get lonely! :D

I have yet to feel "any" heat emanating from this thing. Definitely not while just browsing or reading.

I have the Apple cover and don't think I've watched a video when it wasn't on.

edit: now have well over 4 hours use since I put the screen shield on it and no finger prints all over. Gotta love it.

Well, after what... 3-4 weeks, found a way to edit posts which makes things much easier. Yeah, I know... I'm a little on the slow side.

Was having a problem with misspelled words at first and not being able to put the cursor next to the individual letter, but having to delete a whole word and re-type it. Once the cursor is on the screen, then touch the screen to bring up the little magnifying glass. With the magnifying glass on the screen, look in it and you are able to move the cursor to any specific point you want.

Also, on the matter of scrolling within the forum message box. Do the same thing. Bring up the magnifier, then move it to the top or bottom of the box and the content will then scroll, albeit very slowly.

It still would have been so much easier if there were arrow keys on the built-in touch keyboard. This to me is a very narrow-minded oversight and makes several things much harder than they need to be.

Thanks again Bobtomay for the heads up! When I finally can afford an iPad I will have to remember this thread and read though it for sure!
