Linux Install

How is best way to run or install Linux on my iMac?

Personally I use VMware and a virtual machine but you could use bootcamp and just install linux into the partition. Depends on what you need from Linux. I have software that I need to run demos - and the Virtual Machine is fine for that. If I really need to do some real computing work I VNC to a beefy linux server.

Why do you need linux? Do you know about macports and fink? There are a lot of FOSS software ported directly to the Mac.

I've to do the same and I don't know if VMWare is sufficient to what I want.

Which distro do you want to run?

Which what?

Distro = distribution. Which distribution of Linux are you planning on running? Do you have the system requirements for Matlab?

I'm planning to use Ubuntu 9.10.
About the requirements, I already use it in Mac OS so I think it will work correctly in Linux, won't it?

@Focations: I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my MBP (10.6.3, 2.53GHz 4GB) using Boot Camp with absolutely no problems. I still haven't gotten around to hunting down the drivers to get it fully up and running, but it works well enough out of the box, and if you're familiar with Linux, that'll be no problem.

The problem is that I can't use bootcamp now, because o I had already a problem with my HD

If you are running Matlab - why not run it on OSX directly? You will loose processing power by trying to run a Virtual Machine. If you could run bootcamp then you really wouldn't loose anything - but why bother having to reboot if you could run Matlab directly on the Mac?

The Robot Simulator was developed by teachers from my college and it only works on Linux...

I'm not 100% clear on what happened to your disk, so I probably shouldn't be doling out advice, but couldn't you just back up your data and reformat the drive? I'm pretty sure at that point you'd have a clean start and be able to do whatever was necessary to get you up and running properly. Unless, of course, I'm missing some essential part of your problem, which is a distinct possibility.
