App when iMac Sleeps

What happens to an application when my iMac goes to sleep. I am using transmission and my computer is set on a timer to go to sleep in 45 minutes if nothing is done. So I was wondering what would happen to that app when the computer goes to sleep? Does it just stop where it is at?

It probably won't let the computer sleep. It will force it to stay on and then when it is done, it will let the computer sleep.

okay cool, thats what I was sorta hoping for, I was going to try to look around and see if there were any settings to make the computer not sleep while things are running.

If you are really curious, let it download something. Come back 50 minutes later and see if the computer is asleep or if it is still running the program. Sometimes, you need to see if it will work, cause I could be dead wrong.

haha ya well that will probably be the case tonight because the download will still be going but I didn't want the download to stop. But I know the computer will sleep when other programs are "running" like iCal and Safari. They are not quit so they are technically running I guess? So I am not sure if it would differentiate between those, which it would sleep on, and between Transmission running a download.

An active download typically does not prevent the machine from going to sleep and the download will stop when it does.

Thanks, bobtomay, is there any way to like set "Do not sleep with active ..." or just shut the sleep feature off all together the easiest solution?

When I have a long download going, I just set the sleep function to never for that night and set the display to turn off after 15 minutes or something.

My advice is to download Caffeine. It's a little coffee mug in the menu bar that you can click to turn the sleep settings off. Then, when done, you can click it again to turn sleep back on. It makes life way easier. link

Here's a tip, to turn off your imac's screen hit Control + shift + eject.
