When, in any program or website, I choose to browse for files, a box comes up, and to select the file, I choose a folder from a list, which then displays sub-folders in another list, etc., until I find the file. Is there any way to change it so that instead I see a box with folder icons that I can click on? Thanks.

If your browsing a website and you look for file/folders i believe that cant be changed as that is how the web page is made.

If your in finder you can change your view from list, icon, column or cover flow as to how you see each file/folder ....
Is this what you mean ??

Well I mean when I am in, say, Open Office, and I browse for a file. So Finder opens, but I did not just generally open it up: the program did. Is there any way to change how programs pull it up, i.e. in icon form versus a list?

You can change how they appear as where the arrow shows

Once you pick column, list or icon whenever that opens it should open in your choice.

Ok yes, that is the situation I mean. Now my question is this: instead of that box with arrows under each folder, is there a way to make OS X "always" open a box with folder icons instead?

I go into *finder* and click anywhere on the window the cmd~j you will get this window

Then just select 'always open in icon view'. This will happen for all windows now. If for some reason you need to goto *list* view it will revert back to icon view when nexted opened ......

EDIT : just tried it in Word and it comes up as *icon* every time :)
