I asked this in another thread but sorry if asking it again...but i formatted my WD My Passport 500GB HD to be compatible with Windows so I can backup my content from my friends and family's Windows based computers. As well as my own. I want to know if I can still use Time Machine under this format? can I get some advice with this issue?

I'm 99% certain it has to be in mac OX journaled to allow time machine to work - as none of my Fat32/nfts hard drives worked til I formatted them.

No, it will not work with Time Machine. Jonik is correct - the drive (or partition) must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Tell your friends and family to quit being so cheap and get their own external drives and set up their own back up system.
500 GB external drives are as cheap as $75 and 1TB externals can be had for $100.
