iPad and Comic Books

I've had my eye on a DvD collection of all the issues of Amazing Spider-man at Amazon for under $50. I'm assuming these are scanned PDFs. Any reason they may not be viewable on the iPad?

Depends on whether it lets you rip them to disk or not, or if you have to use their app and have the disc inserted to read them. Have never seen comics on DVD before. Going to check it out now.

And speaking of Comics - Elf Quest - 32 years old today. Was somewhere in my 20's when this came out (won't say exactly where, let's just say my wife never understood how an almost 30 yr old could still be buying comics). For me, the Pini's were the real beginning of the graphic novels.

Loved it back in the day along with Conan, Red Sonja and a few others.

Like most guys of my/our generation, I had a substantial collection of comic books that my mom got rid of when I wasn't around to defend them.

I've wanted to replace them, but being naturally frugal (read cheap) I'm not willing to pay collector's prices. Hence my interest in the comics on DvD.

And throw these apps on the ipad/ipod touch for a lot fo nice reading on a plane/train going somewhere. I like this idea.

It may be hard to believe but I never saw the Elf Quest comics (just went to Wikipedia to check them out), but at one time I had all of the Conan series. My favorite though is the LOTR trilogy plus the Hobbit. I re-read these on about a two year cycle.

BTW: I went ahead and got the Spider Man DvD. We'll see when it gets here.

And of course it's all in flash... If the link works, here is their first one in '78. They were the first I remember putting their work out on glossy paper.

I think the DVD will depend on if you can copy it to your drive and then get it imported into Stanza or not.
May have to try one myself.

I have a comic collection I bought at a closed box sale anyone want to buy them ? mostly silver surfer

It seems like the iPad would be a natural for comic books, graphic novels, etc. Way better than the "electronic ink"-equipped e-readers, that's for sure.

Bring "The Ghost Who Walks" The Phantom to the table and the 1st Gen iPad might have to be on the cards.

If you can move the files to your computer and get the desktop app of Stanza to work with them, you should be gold for the iPhone/iPod Touch version as well.

If you notice, I quoted and was speaking specifically related to the DVD set Razormac is getting there.
That is suppose to be in pdf format.

The flash remark in a previous post was related to the Elf Quest web site which is totally flash.

I think the flash comment was in regard to the Elfquest website Bobtomay recomended I take a look at.

Got Amazing Spiderman Today

Good news mostly. The comics are PDFs and can be copied or dragged to the desktop from the DvD. the scans look decent. Only downside is there is a visible watermark unless I use Adobe Reader. Stanza (via Calibre) and Goodreader PDF reader along with Preview will handle the files readily, but the watermark is visible, not unreadable, but a little annoying.

If I had to I think I could remove the watermarks and reconvert to PDF, but I prefer not to. Bottomline: should be readable on the iPad, though mybe not ideal unless they come out with Adobe reader for the iPad.
Regardless, I'll probably be buying some of the other collections in the series.

The watermark is a really shame. A masive shame. But otherwise it looks good. Thanks for the info.

The watermark is visible but isn't bad enough to where I wouldn't be willing to live with it. And, If I use the Adobe Reader it isn't visible, just not sure if Adobe Reader will be available on the iPad.
The reason I mentioned stripping the watermark, when I did a conversion to eBook for Stanza using Calibre, the watermarks actually showed up as seperate pages between each 2 page scan of the comic. This leads me to believe they could be removed, but then again, I don't really want to do that for 500 comic books.

Bottomline: I am willing to live with the status quo if Goodreader or Stanza turns out to be best choice on the iPad.

That looks interesting, but I couldn't tell from the website. Will it handle my archived PDFs?
