There certainly is.

The only way I know is to install PathFinder (Finder replacement), which has an option to remove Finder from the dock.

So, I'm pretty sure it can be done via terminal by someone with more knowledge than me!

And all that does is substitute one Finder icon for another.

i agree...i want it off bc currently I notice that there are three ways for that finder to pop up...scroll right with the four finger deal...click on my HD or that dock space and that's to much...would love just one

Hide the icon on your desktop and don't use gestures. Do that and you only have one. To hide the icons on your Desktop, go to Finder > Preferences > General and uncheck what you don't want to show on your Desktop under "Show these items on the desktop".

You can change a plist file.

Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/
Backup DockMenus.plist
Open DockMenus.plist in your favorite text editor with root access
Find section finder-running and add new sub-section <dict> <key>command</key> <integer>1004</integer> <key>name</key> <string>REMOVE_FROM_DOCK</string> </dict>
Open Terminal and run killall Dock.
Right click on Finder icon in Dock - Bingo!

p.s After Dock restart (manual relaunch or mac reboot) you need manually remove Finder icon from Dock
;D
