I have a 20" iMac G5 and was wanting to put 512mb more ram in it. Is this a very difficult task? I would rather do it myself then haul it to the local apple dealer.

From what I have read. The iMac was designed for users to install and replace parts easily.

I was most surprised to note that in the mac handbook for my new iBook, after telling me how to connect to the power outlet and which was the on button, there was a chapter telling me how to take it apart and install wireless card and extra memory.

PC manufacturers shoot customers if they try that !!!!

The chapter's about 3 pages of the A5 booklet, so how hard can it be?

There's no "Opening this case/breaking this seal invalidates your warranty" stickers, like on PCs, so have a go, I say...

It's a very simply procedure. I did the installation on my friend's iMac, and it took less than 5 minutes. It is definitely not something you'll want to drag the machine to the local Apple dealer to pay them to do for you.

Very easy to do. First thing to do is unplug the power cord from the computer. Place the computer screen down on a towel. There are 3 screws in the bottom to unloosen, they don't come all the way out. Lift the back off the computer. You will see 2 slots for ram, place your ram in the empty slot. Fit the back piece back in place and tighten the screws. Put plug back in and you are done.

My setup: 17in SD iMac G5, 1GB RAM & 12in iBook, 1.5GB RAM (Both computers standard config.)
I installed 2GB(way overkill but oh well :)) in my 17in iMac just about a week ago and it was EXTREMELY easy. just look ing the manual that cam with the mac and it walks you right through it. Couldn't be easier.

Thanks so much, I will give it a go myself. I appreciate all of the feedback.
