ipod not showing in itunes

i plug the ipod in and it doesnt seem to register this on itunes. i cant sync my ipod as there is no ipod device listed. the ipod tells me i am connected.
it worked yesterday.

does anybody have any good ideas about what happened or, more importantly, how i can get this corrected?
