And just for future reference (since I've seen you use the same spelling in other threads), it's Yosemite, not Yoshmite. :p

From Apple.com:

Hardware Requirements

* PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor
* Built-in FireWire
* DVD drive is required for installation
* At least 256MB of physical RAM

It will work with a G3 processor, but if it is 512k of ram I think you will run into problems with that. If you meant 512mb ram there shouldn't be a problem.

won't that run a little slow on the G3? I made sure I bought at least a G4 for the eventual upgrade, but so far I'm happy with Panther.

Panther runs well on the G3 (with enough RAM) and Tiger will run faster than Panther. He will need a DVD drive or send in for the CDs in order to install though.

Actually, I haven't really seen any evidence so far to support this. In fact, what little I have seen indicates that Panther has the advantage in terms of speed. However, Tiger should still perform fine on a G3 with a sufficient amount of RAM.
