Can Ken Burns effect work on vertical stills?

Mac OS X v. 10.6.5
I am new to Mac (old PC user) and iMovie 09. I have learned how to use the Ken Burns effect on horizontal stills but cannot find how to turn the red/green boxes so that they work with vertical stills. Can they, and if so, how?
