AT&T wants to charge users who over use data.

Even if you pay for unlimited data?

Well that's redonkulous. If AT&T ever follows through with something like that, just think of the chaos. I mean, how do you put a limit on unlimited data? It doesn't even make sense!

I would literally go to AT&T and cancel my contract and spit in the manager's face. I would then proceed to call my Verizon rep and get a good deal on the Droid and service that is actually unlimited. Stupid AT&T.

Unlimited service is never usually unlimited. On broadband in the UK, unlimited basically means 2GB, and on 3G unlimited basically means 500MB/1GB, so I'd assume it was the same for in AT&Ts case. Sucks though, I know :|. But if it is 1GB, I don't really see how you could overuse it anyway.

That's true DriftNismo. Even though it says unlimited there is still a cap somewhere. Same for Verizon.

Don't get too worked up. Verizon also has a data cap on its "unlimited" data plan :p

I highly doubt that a manager came up with that idea.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the droid platform. I'm going to give it another year or so to work out all the kinks, and also wait for the 4g network to come out. Then I'll look into switching back to the verizon, and dumping the Iphone.

But knowing Apple, they'll have something to kicks droid's *** in a year.

LOL, just ask Comcast.

For years, Comcast marketed their high speed internet as "unlimited high speed internet". Now, suddenly, they no longer use that word - and there's bandwidth consumption caps of 250GB/month. And if you hit that cap, you won't be able to exceed it and pay extra. No, you just get a warning from Comcast and termination of service if it continues.

So much for unlimited...

I do not know how much data I use, I don't track it. I just downloaded an app that does. It says today I have used 70MB.

Everything lies within the contracts which we sign. If you look into your contracts, and you don't see anything BUT the term unlimited, they ATT are responsible to live up to their contractual agreements.

This is why there are so many class action lawsuits in the U.S. And if ATT really tried to pull that stunt, ATT customers could most definitely both get out of their contracts, AND sue for breach of contract on ATT's part. All which is needed are NON lazy customers.

Consumers will win if they stand in large numbers and force the FCC and these corporations to take a step back and change their practices. This happened with MCI communications some years back, where before they went bust, their customers (self included) were able to get out of their contracts due to MCI breaking the stated terms of service. They of course were bought out, forget by whom.

ATT needs to have their asses whooped but good. I hope to see European practices take the place of the current U.S. ones as far as these things are concerned. It's a joke, really. The one huge eye opener for me since I moved to Europe is how incredibly behind the U.S. is with these things. It stifles technology and competition to the point of a stand still.

I, for one, will be glad when my iPhone contract ends in about a year. The way I use it, it is essentially an electronic PIM with a phone built into it. I'm sure I can find Linux-based replacement hardware for less, that lets me check the weather and news and sync my calendar/email/address book. Wherever I wind up, it will likely not be with AT&T.

-funny they limit the data rates where i find the att/ i-phone VOICE communication to be the bad. anywhere in town here ( Denver ) its drops parts of the speech and it is garbled. generally i get text messages fast and resolve web pages with success.

-limits on unlimited data will have an effect on google like services like google maps in the "gps" mode. it feels like the iphone design is so dependent on an active data connection. why did they design the iphone like that if the network support is just not there.

-att has the least to offer customers. odd to read they can dictate restrictions.

Too many...
It's kind of sad...one of the best phones on the market, with one of the WORST cell phone companies. The good thing about this change is that it's not in our contract right now, meaning when they do bring the new policy, the consumers can deny it and their contracts will end immediately(with no penalties). I would do that because I use my iphone a lot! I have NO idea what replacement is as good as the iphone though...att pretty much owns me as long as they have the iphone only on their network. And no, I don't like jailbreaking...

As much as I dislike AT&T, they are really no worse than other companies when it comes to their policies. Their service leaves a bit to be desired but has progressively gotten better in the 18 months I've had my iPhone. Frankly, their customer service has been better than Verizons ever was and their Web site is easier to Navigate IMO.

Way... way too many specs to list.
Glad I don't get coverage darn near anywhere here in Tucson, or I'd worry about this. Can't wait to drop AT&T, their coverage is so far second only to Sprint for bringing the suck.

Yes, you're right; I've been on the phone a few times to AT&T (about some problems I had with my AT&T Tilt not too long ago) and they were very direct and quick to answer questions, and I'm not sure how good Verizon's customer service are, but I know AT&T's were better than any UK network :p.
