Does Ubuntu require any security features other than a router firewall? (Home network with little chance of neighbors breaking in.)

I'm looking to install it on my PC which presently has XP installed and will eventually install it (Ubuntu) on my Mac.

The Ubuntu documentation has quite a bit on security but nothing on virus control and the like.

TIA

Ubuntu is a unix derivative just like OSX, and has a similar level of security

Compared to Windows, the amount of threats is puny

That said, standard Internet practices should apply, like keeping a firewall and guarding against installing software from unsure sources.

Linux security is pretty solid and as long as you stick to good practices in terms of your internet usage as louishen stated, you should be fine. Are you looking to use it as a "general" box or as a server?

To start I want to run the client version so I can convert my Win app to a Linux app. It is something I believe would work very well as a web application and I was told I'd need to make that conversion. Then I suppose I'd install it on Ubuntu server.

(If it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about insofar as the web app side of things, you are correct. Any better suggestions would be welcome.)

If you're only going to do local testing, you have little to fear. Again, just play it safe (as you always should) and you'll be fine.
