"video" vs. "film"

I'm a new Mac user. I use a Panasonic HD video camera to take family videos. When I download the video to Mac the finished product looks more like "film" than "video tape." It is not a bright and clear as I would like it to be.
I have viewed the Preferences but I don't see how to correct this. I have stopped into two different Apple stores and have not been able to get an answer. Thanks for your help!

I download video directly from the video camera into iMovie. Using an iMac with 10.5.8 OS.

Say what version of iMovie you are using and what type of camera (miniDV, HDV, other).

You need to use iMovie HD for a start.... I see you have a Panasonic HD camcorder.
