Multiple Files Problem

I am new to the mac. I have noticed that when I download a picture that somone sends me or when I upload one onto my computer I get multiple files of the same shot. Do I have something set up wrong in the settings? Is there any way to clean up this multiple file problem and what is the best way to keep files organized on the Mac? Any help is appreciated.

You mean when you receive it in your Downloads folder, for example, you receive two copies in the same folder?

Yes in my downloads folder there will be numerous copies of the same image.

I've never experienced that - the only thing I can think of is that if you double click when a single click is needed you'd get two copies. But apart from multiple clicking I can't see any other way it would come about.
