I'm looking at getting a new lens. Currentlly just using the EF-S 18-55mm that came with my 450D - it's nice enough but looking for something to add to it.

I'm thinking EF 28-135mm. Has anyone got one or used one?

I managed to source one on eBay for $300 AUD. Deal? Or should I look for another lens?

It's just going to be an all purpose lens :) Here's the link anyway - any feedback would be great.

Canon Australia - EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

well since you have 18-55 the 55-250 is cheap for a lens. around 200-250 USD

I just want an 'all round' lens. I tend to shoot landscape, buildings etc.. Just whatever is around.

I looked at the 28-135mm just because it was a wide angled lens and it's only $300 so a decent price for me.
;)

I'm still a newbie though..

if you are doing landscape then just go with a like more zoom lense. If you really want to go wide angle i allways suggest fisheye lenses cause it is amazing what you can do with that kind of buldge. i curently use a Peleng 8mm

I just looked at Peleng 8mm - It's about $400 AUS which is ok to, compared to the $900 + for the Canon 15mm Fish Eye lol

Is Peleng a good brand?

If you're happy with the 18-55 I would get the Canon 70-200 f/4. Having one lens for a wide range focal lengths is a compromise. If you add the 70-200 you will see an improvement in image quality. Then you could buy a Canon 17-40 f/4 to replace the 18-55, that would be a great setup.

I have a Tokina 12-24 I bought for landscapes. It was in the $500 range new, but i'm sure you can find one used for less. Nice solid lens with great performance.

One of the best "budget" lenses in Canon's lineup is the 70-200 f/4 listed above.

The 28-135 is ok from what I hear. The problem with super zooms like the 55-250 is that they're usually optically worse than something with a smaller zoom range.

Also, check out Tamron, Sigma, and other good third party lens providers. You can save a ton of money on similar lenses without losing much optically.

The peleng is horrible for that price. They use to sell for about $250USD but the prices have went up. It not optically great, but for a $250 fish it was a decent deal. It can't touch the Canon 15 f/2.8 on performance, the problem is that when you're using a 15mm FE on a crop camera with an APS-C sensor, you're not going to get that much of a FE effect. I'm using one on a 5DII and it's sharp. Very sharp. Very very very sharp. That's all I have to say about that.

If your budget is about 300 then the 55-250 or the 28-135 would be a good choice. The 55-250 is a newer lens and should have a better IS on it. I had the 28-135 and sold it to get the 24-105 L which is a great lens, but expensive. I also have the 17-40 L which is another great lens. You may be able to find one used for 300 - 400 if you look around. Try Photography-on-the-net forums. There is a real nice for sale section there. The lens I use the most is my Canon 85mm F/1.8 prime. This lens works great for low-light photography which is what I do the most of. The 85mm should run around 350 or so.

What kind of photography do you do?
Here are some popular choices.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm = SUPER FUN lens, but more of a creative lens = 720.00
Canon EF 28-135mm IS = Cheap and gives you some telephoto - Used 250.00
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 = Kit replacement, faster and much sharper - 350.00
.... Sigma also has an equivalent version of this^ lens.
Canon EF 50mm F1.4 = All around prime lens, sharp and fast - 350.00
Canon EF 85mm F1.8 = Great portrait lens - 375.00

If you have the cash...
Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 = Great all around lens, fast and SUPER sharp. - 1275
Canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS = Not as fast^ but has the extra reach and Image stabilization - 1175
Canon EF 70-200mm = The most popular telephoto lens. Theres four different versions ranging from 600-1900

PS: EF-S lenses only work on crop sensors like (ex: Rebels/40/50D/T1i).

PSII: The Canon 50mm F1.8 is an ok lens, its super cheap at 100.00.
But the build quality isnt great and the F1.4 version is very much worth the extra 250.00

PSIII: Canon Crop sensors are 1.6. So multiply the MM and thats your actual focal length.
ex: 10mm = 16mm and 200mm = 320mm
............

I personal own 24-70 F2.8L & 70-200 F2.8L IS.
Before i got the 5D Mark II, i had a 40D and i had the 10-22mm (but i sold it). I really want a Ultra Wide Angle Lens again, so i might get either 16-35 or 17-40.

You already have a midrange zoom. So if I were you I'd be looking for extending my optical range one way or the other. I have the 10-22mm Canon zoom an can attest to its quality. It's not a fisheye, but the wide angle is spectacular. I also have the 70-300 DO and it really is a champ for carrying around and getting close to your subject. I like its compact size.
