can I upgrade straight from Panther to Tiger?

Hi guys

I have an old power pc G4 running Panther version 10.3.9 which doesn't seem to be compatible with any recent downloads that I want to do as the operating system is so old now. I love my Mac and want to be able to download a more uptodate operating system so that I can carry on using it to the best of it's potential. Any suggestions on the best way to proceed gratefully received.

You can certainly upgrade from OS X 10.3 (Panther) to 10.4 (Tiger).
There is no place to download it, but there are several third-party retailers and auction sites where you can purchase a retail version of OS X 10.4 to install.

As long as your hardware supports 10.4, you should be fine.

A powermac G4, with adequate memory of say 1GB or more will handle Tiger nicely.

Be prepared for a shock at the price of Tiger even when second hand. Expect to pay around the $100 mark. Also make sure you only purechase the black coloured full retail install discs, and NOT the silver grey model specific discs sold so much on eBay etc. These will only work with the model machine they were released with.

as long as it's 867MHz or above, and has the memory, you'll be fine.

I just (today) upgraded my G4 from 10.2.8 to now 10.5.8 and it runs very well!

bought the upgrade for $70 look on craigslist~!!

He said "Tiger" not "Leopard"

In any case, as long as his CPU is at 333mHz or faster, it'll run Tiger.
256 to 512 RAM (recommended is 1GB), is also required.
And at least 3 gigs of hard drive space is needed, 4 for the X-Code 2 tools.
And a DVD-ROM drive.

For Leopard:

867mHz PPC CPU requirement
DVD drive
512 RAM (1GB is recommended)
9 GB of space on the hard drive.

And no, you cannot run Snow Leopard on Power PC.
