Funny bit... I'm just wondering, isn't a troll some sort of mythical creature from say..."Lord of the Rings"?

Are these trolls the same or is there another meaning?
Forgive my ignorance;D

It's a different context when people say "trolling the forums." It still means that the person is ignorant much like a troll. Only difference here is that they just says things to get a reaction from people.

The word "troll" (noun) is a mythical being from Scandinavian folklore, and comes in various depictions - from "ogres" in English mythology to the equivalent of "giants". Another related word "trolle" (verb) means performing arts of magic - usually of the harmful or chaotic kind.

In internet slang, the word may also be related to the fishing technique "trawling", which in this context would be browsing through the internet for web-communities with the intent to post controversial and inflammatory messages.

Tempting they are - feed them you shall not.

I mentioned this a long time ago here, but on a very large Windows forum we had a member (Troll) who actually called himself Guy Under The Bridge! Hey, he was honest at least. He was Trolling against AMD CPU's at the time that AMD would blow down anything Intel. They kept banning and even IP Blocking the dood. He came back with a different ISP each time. Worst Troll I have ever run into.

Unfortunately, no.

As was said in the WoW episode of South Park: "How do you kill someone who has no life?". ;)

And starting a flame war by posts such as "Why PCs are better than Macs" tickles their fancy and they get their jollies seeing responding flaming them in return.
