Maybe you need to authorize iTunes to play them, if the songs have been purchased via iTunes.

Can you preview it?

I.e. select the .mp3 file in a finder window and hit space - does it play.

I had one .mp3 file ages ago that would play in every player by iTunes, well, it played 2 seconds then skipped to the next track. Never found a cure, other than buying it from the iTunes store.

If a friend gave you all of your songs, it's possible they gave them to more people than the license allows. In that case, iTunes will no longer play it. As I recall, iTunes only allows songs to be downloaded to 5 iPods/computers. If you're running iTunes under windows on a virtual machine, I'm not sure but that might that might count as a new download.

(My daughter had a similar problem with some of her songs.)

Hmm...

If they are MP3 files, they can't have licences tho can they? WMA or AAC yeah, but MP3 is DRM free.

Just make me 100% clear here, are they all MP3 files?

This is correct, if you got songs from anymore than 5 of your friends (and you are the sixth computer), the song will be de-authorized by iTunes. Your best bet at this point must just be to buy the song.

I doubt it’s an authorization problem as others are suggesting if it works in Windows Media Player.

Try right-clicking on the song in iTunes and click Show in Windows Explorer. This will show you where iTunes is looking for the file; make sure it’s correct.
