That's about £10,000's worth I think. Very nice.

I just prices this and got $17,297.00 CAD ($19,545.61 with taxes). From this, I come to two conclusions. Either you're lying or you're sys admin is the most easily persuadable person on the planet. There is absolutely no need to order a machine of that capability for "testing" purposes.

Who cares if he got the computer, I know a FEW people who order like that, clicking every upgrade on the apple online store. Good for them if they can afford it, who cares if they need it?

It's people LIKE that who push technology forward, not the jealous whiners always looking for a deal or those that buy base models.

Think outside the bun! :D

I might add $20,000 to a large company may be a drop in the bucket.;)

But more importantly...where's the "glory" in bragging about a computer setup that a person's employer owns???

Post some pics...;D including "about this mac".
And if you have 24/7 access, how about in the next week.

If you are bragging about it like you do now, you'll yourself will be anxious to do so.

Good luck... (looking forward);D

Let's make a poll out of this one.

I am for a big NO

And I'm ready to stand really, really corrected...

A big NO... to what? OP has not asked any questions in his post, so what would be the question of the poll? The verity of post #1? Anyway, I know my eyes would hurt after using a 30" display for a while - especially when pressing a 4x512 NVIDIA-card to the max, so I do not envy the OP at all.

I don't care if he got the machine. And it's not people like this who push technology forward. That's like saying if I had an 8 car garage and filled it with cheap cars that I would be encouraging automotive innovation. Just because you have 4 GPUs doesn't mean you're pushing innovation. What encourages innovation are people who want more power with less, not the people who want to put 4 GPUs in a machine. Those who want a new way to do things and pressure companies for it encourage innovation, not people who settle with adding more power by adding more parts. If the person had added a single 2GB GPU (regardless of whether this exists - GPUs aren't my forte) and it didn't work, this would encourage Nvidia/ATI to build better GPUs. Buying 4 "underpowered" GPUs does little but reinforce the notion that current technologies work.

Sure, you could put more horsepower in a car but buying a machine like this is like buying a car with more horsepower without regard for engine size, weight, fuel consumption. It's power at all costs. Innovation is about increasing power/efficiency/whatever at little to no extra cost.

I might add $20,000 to a large company may be a drop in the bucket.;)
True but what corporation would spend 20K on a "testing" machine? You could easily do with a computer with lower specs to test things. ;)

But OSX is so good you wouldn't notice any difference in speed unless you needed to find out the meaning of life or something. XD

Yes even in big companies with deep pockets...it usually still comes down to a single person making the decision to buy or not to buy...so I agree that not many managers will spend $20,000 on a "testing" machine...unless they're 90% confident they will like it!:)

Nobody wants to have "egg" on their face for making a $20,000 dollar foolish decision...especially at the rate computers depreciate...even Mac Pro's!;)

I'm not sure what you would actually test on this machine. It's not something that might be standard issue someday to end users, it doesn't run any hardcore test applications like RPT, Silk Performer, HPQC or any of the Rational suite of tools. It's not an Enterprise class server nor would you be able to accurately pull data from it and extrapolate how some other system or OS would run. And what possible corporate or enterprise class test would you be running that needs 4 GPU's on a Mac anyhow? Just curious. :)

I agree and that's why my original statement included the conclusion that the sys admin is easily persuaded. My guess is that the sys admin didn't really know either what the machine was for or how much it would cost.
