When people spell "Mac" as "MAC"
Where does that capitalization come from? What could MAC possibly be an acronym for?

Also, when people spell "iPod" among the lines of "I-pod".

For some reason these things annoy me, anyone else feel the same?

Yes, it annoys lots of people. Folks harp on it all the time around here. I'm surprised you've never seen the others comment n it.

Disk as Disc annoys some people (you know who you are :D)
It is confusing that one though.
I think you may be a little OCD, but I see where you come from!

If you don't like the shortened "Mac" abbreviation...then type "Macintosh" 1000 times...and pretty soon you will be using "Mac" as well.

"Mac" is an abbreviation for Macintosh...plain & simple!!!

Actually, it's the other way around. Disk is short for 'diskette'. Disc refers to a specific shape. So, cars have 'disc' brakes and we use Compact Discs.

Although I have no idea why hard drives are sometimes referred to as a Hard Disk.

My guess is "floppy disk" versus "hard disk" like the metal "platters" found in a hard drive.

Mac or MAC may refer to:

Mac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After reading that, it really amuses me that some people indignantly write "MAC stands for _____" (fill in the blank). When it should be "...for ____ or _____ or _____ etc."

Not really.
What's the difference between a "disc" and a "disk"?

I try to be correct in my usage of disk and disc; if you catch me, feel free to call me out on it

Technically, the contraptions are hard disk drives...meaning, the mechanism that turns the rigid disk. If you're going to use one or the other, "hard disk" (referring to the storage media itself) is probably better than "hard drive" (referring to the rotor mechanism exclusive of the media.)

It honestly doesn't bother me much, unless someone is referring to the MAC address of the network adapter they are using in their Mac and they use poor english making it hard to understand what exactly they are referring to. I get more irked by poor explanations of what issue someone is having - when they explain one problem, you come up with a solution to that problem but then they reference something completely different.

It doesn't really annoy me but I do find it odd:

For me MAC = Media Access Control but then I'm interested in networking. Perhaps if I were into Aircraft then it would mean something else to me...

I imagine that it is simply the result of people seeing the Mac as an alternative to the PC and as that is in caps then maybe Mac should be as well - of course I am just guessing here.

Another vote for Wiki:Mac :p

Nothing personal, but I find it annoying when people put Macs in one group and refer to any other computer as a "PC".

It is even more annoying when people are talking about a Windows machine and simply call it a "PC".
Even Apple's own advertising campaign promotes this mild, yet still inaccurate misnomer.

The Mac is a PC (Personal Computer).
Heck, up until the changeover to Intel chips, the entire Macintosh line was based on the Power PC processor.
Now that there are Intel chips, Macs use the exact same hardware as any other computer on the market.

If you're talking about a Mac, then call it a Mac.
If you're talking about a Windows computer, then refer to it as such.
If you're talking about some flavor of *nix, then say so.

yes, and I get annoyed with my auto-spell check for calling me out on words I still habitually spell with an added 'u'

Nah the added u is nothing bad. Just the Australian way of spelling some words.

Yes..this has always been an inaccuracy that I always sort of disliked.

Whenever I refer to "the other guys"...I try to say "Windows Computer" or "WinTel" machine...or actually use the manufacturer name such as Dell, IBM, HP, etc.

And I certainly wholeheartedly agree...that a Macintosh is a "PC" (personal computer).
