Transfer photos from windows to mac

My apologies if this thread is current. So new here, I'm squeaky. I've 5,000 photos on my other machine and I want to transfer them to my new Mac Pro, buying it tomorrow.

Do I need an Ethernet cable? If so, which one?

Do you have an external HD? If so, use that. If not, you can set up a shared folder on either of the machines and transfer your pictures that way.
