Hi,

i have a friend who has Final Cut HD 4.5 installed on her Mac. She has given me some fottage she has done on DVD's in DVD format

She is now wanting to convert the DVDs back to a file format she can import into this version on Final Cut.

Someone else tried, made some .mov files (I think) and that didn't/wouldn't import.

Can someone advise me what file format will work with this version and if there are any free tools that will let me rip unprotected DVDs into this format.

She is a short film maker and is wanting to do a show reel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Without source you will lose all project related data.
You could use a dvd ripper and convert it to .MOV and then import that flat file into Final Cut

What do you mean by Project Data?

Can you recommend a DVD ripper preferably free?

I know v little about codecs. Are there any codec issues I need to be aware of when ripping? Is there a particular codec that will work better than others for v4.5? Is the codec even an issue?

Thanks again

I don't know what codecs are supported by 4.5 (I never used the product and was having some trouble finding info about what files were supported by it the other day when I first read your post), but you can use Hanbrake to rip a non-copyprotected DVD.
