Hey guys, I just got my first mac  and I am looking for a software that is free or very inexpensive that will let me create simple .jpg or .gif files from scratch. I have tried looking for it online but have had no luck, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Check out Gimp.

Yes it has a funny name (which stands for GNU.Image.Manipulation.Program), but it is widely known as 'the free photoshop'.

I have used it and it is pretty good, but I use photoshop but that's a bit out of the free/inexpensive range.

Gimp is a great software. As is Paintbrush. Best of all, it's free!

For photo editing, you can use iPhoto, which is part of the included iLife suite.

Congratulations on your new mac!

Painbrush is like MSPaint... I'm not sure it can make Gif animations though. Gimp can. I would check out Pixen if you want animations in MSpaint style.
