What can I use for Image retrieval of images on a SD card?

You could use an external USB card reader and then either save the images to a folder or import them into iPhoto. I import mine into iPhoto.

Just drag and drop the files into iPhoto. I am assuming you mean a perfectly functioning SD card, and not one that's gone AWOL.
