• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Ive been using imovie for a while with my panasonic sd9 hd camcorder but you have to convert the video to a rubbish format in order upload it and then at the end i have to down grade the fottage again to put it on youtube?! so then the footage looks like its been filmed on a camara phone!

I want to get a camcorder that i can plug into my ibook g4 and use my imovie 6.0.3 and export you youtube without it looking rubbish at the other end!

Your biggest problem as I see it is - iMovie '06 and even worse, the iBook G4 does not support AVCHD. And that camcorder of yours records in AVCHD. The only way to even possibly get better footage is to do a transcode yourself into a format you can use.

Here's a thread on people with a similar problem (different camera, but since it's AVCHD, it's really the same problem):

Problems with iBook G4 and Sony HD Camcorder - Mac Forums

My suggestions:

1) If you can afford it, it's really time to upgrade to an Intel Mac - that way you'll be able to work with AVCHD footage as iMovie '08 and '09 can properly transcode and use the AIC format which is a low compression editable format that maintains video quality.

2) Get a third party converter (like Voltaic) and attempt to convert the video - it will take a long, long time with Voltaic - I'd suggest you doing a trial before purchasing to make sure it works for you.

3) Get an standard def minidv camera (an HDV camera may work, but I don't know if iMovie '06 is compatible with HDV).
