I may have been offered a new job. It pays an extra £15k a year, is at a very senior level, comes with high end company car, and perks. However I will need to travel to work which will amount to 3 hours commuting a day.

I currently work from home and can fit my weight lifting and training for my running events easily. With the new job I will only be able to train at weekends.

Yes, you do. Because if its an office job, you would be surprised what kind of exercises you can work into your day at work.

That's a lot of freedom to compromise, but a nice pay increase esp with the perks. Is there much room for upward mobility from that job platform? Would you be able to get back to having such a flexible schedule again someday? Or would you think of relocating to be closer to your new office? The trade off of personal freedom is a big one.

No matter how much money you make, you'll never be able to buy-back your time and health. I don't think it is such an easy 'Yes'

hmm, if you're not going to move and aside from the matter of personal freedom vs a boss:

3 hrs a day and a 5 day work week is 15 hrs a week or 750 hrs a year drive time with 2 wk vacation. Using a 40 hr week, that amounts to 18.75 weeks per year of time lost. That's over 4 1/2 months of work a year. If you invested an addtional 4 1/2 months a year into your business at home, how much does that earn you?

As to whether your time is worth that money for you is a very personal decision.

I currently have a civic type r company car, they are offering a BMW Msport or similar Audi.

Interesting findings there Bob!

I still haven't made my mind up yet.

I'd say that's a pretty good deal a BMW or Audi.

Perhaps instead of driving you can take a less expensive/quicker transit system? Do you have an efficient subway or bus or lightrail or something?

If they pay for your commute plus give you the car, that makes it slightly worth it.

No it is not worth the extra. That drive will become a millstone around your neck and you will come to hate it.

I live quite rurally so nothing fits the bill really.

I wont be paid overtime due to my position within the company [one level down from director].

The most I have 'commuted' at a residential job [i.e. in an office] is 1 hour which wasn't too bad.

I have been told that after my initial presence I could work some days at home if I wanted. I will be managing quite a lot of staff so I would want my presence felt [so to speak].

I think that I could hold this job down for 2 years, then add it to my CV to get something higher paid and closer to home.....

Man I wouldn't do it.

I am all about enjoying life, and 3 hour drive doesn't seem that enjoyable even for more $.
