How do I choose what time / how often my time machine backs up?

Something I did was to turn it off, then once a week I turn it back on and let it backup for me. Once every hour is way too frequently for me. Go to System Preferences, Time Machine, and then turn if on and off (on left side). I then click the symbol at the top of the screen and tell it to "Back up now"
